Shared Decision Making (SDM) is a health communication approach designed to facilitate patient engagement in treatment decision making. SDM highlights the importance of client-centered care in which the active role of the client is central as well as the importance of collaborative and interactive conversations between clients and therapists, two equally involved parties, regarding the treatment.

Growing evidence regarding the importance of metacognition in schizophrenia spectrum disorders spurred an interest in developing interventions targeting the enhancement of these abilities.  [One such intervention is Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT; Lysaker & Klion, 2017), an integrative model of psychotherapy that seeks to promote holistic metacognitive capacity and consequently increase a positive sense of agency among clients with schizophrenia.
