Marc Gelkopf’s projects

Trauma

Trauma has been observed to be the most important risk factor for the development,
maintenance and worsening of mental health. This has been empirically noted for both
individuals with major mental health problems (as in addiction, those with a declared
psychiatric diagnosis or those in rehabilitation) as well as for the general population that
copes with daily and well recognized stressors such as poverty, social injustice, divorce,
racism and the like, as well as war, terror and the Covid-19 pandemic. We have developed a
number of projects and lines of research in this direction, including the repeated assessment of
a community trauma-focused intervention (Erase-Stress).

Car Accidents

Car accidents are a major source of trauma. We have studied some of the risk factor in
developing posttraumatic symptomatology, specifically the issue of sensory processing
sensitivity. These studies have used intensive daily assessments of individuals having suffered
a car accidents, arriving at the emergency ward.

Burnout

Dentists are especially prone to the development of burnout and posttraumatic
symptomatology. We have studied its risk factor with a focus on sensory processing
sensitivity.

Posttraumatic Growth

Posttraumatic growth is a phenomenon of psychological and social change after a traumatic
event. We have studied this among different ethnic groups, the general civilian population as
well as individuals with serious mental health issues.

We are currently studying the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, both on the general
population, as well as upon individuals with serious mental health issues.

Trauma History

The presence of a traumatic history is the single best predictor of future pathology following
traumatic events. In our studies we have observed that such a history is a far better predictor
than the presence of a ‘mental disorder’.

mental health issues.

Community Interventions

We have studied different community interventions aimed at reducing
symptomatology, both in adults as well as in children. We have assessed
interventions such as Erase-Stress focused on trauma, the use of a psychological
hotline and Arab-Jewish class exchange programs and the assessment of case
management.
